The 115-pound Hinsdale Falcons Silver football
team used another dominating performance by its defense to shut
out the Lombard Falcons White 16-0 in its home opener.
The Falcons did not allow Lombard to cross midfield with its
swarming style and numerous tackles for loss by Kevin Roberts
and a breakthrough 8-yard tackle for loss by Jonah Heiser.
The offense got rolling early with a spectacular 53-yard run off
the right side by George Cote following his offensive line of
Karl Grimm, Brian Hofmann, Brian Roberts, Spencer Groenwold and
Robert McGivney, who like road graders pushed the defenders off
the ball.
Aaron Walsh's downfield block helped spring Cote for another 20
yards, and Cote scored shortly thereafter on a 2-yard run led by
fullback Shelby Parsons Hinsdale completed the two-point
conversion with a precise pass from quarterback John Ryan to the
reliable hands of tight end Henry VanderLaan for an 8-0 lead.
The special teams gave the offense great field position all day
led by the returns of Sam Scott and the kick coverage of Sam
Syed, Jonathan Helm, Quinn Kuhlman and they rose to the occasion
with a safety by a host of tacklers led by Grimm and Roberts for
a 10- 0 lead.
A beautiful 20-yard pass set up the final tally of the day from
Ryan to Jack Liljeberg, which was only eclipsed by a 23-yard
toss to Caleb Koerbel, who also created havoc in the secondary.
Ryan completed the late offensive rally with a 12-yard touchdown
scamper.
Hinsdale Falcons 130-pound Silver Red 14, Wheaton Rams 6: The
Falcons (3-1) ran the ball 30 times for nearly 150 yards, led by
Charlie Cashman's 12 carries for 72 yards and a touchdown.
Quarterback Brad Anlauf and running back Garret Knecht each
contributed eight carries, with Anlauf scoring the other
touchdown and throwing a two-point conversion pass to Knecht.
The offensive line blocking of Dylan Dowling, Grady Tomlinson,
Zach Kerrigan and Achilles Bezanis was particularly effective.
Defensively, The Falcons shut down Wheaton until a
fourth-quarter TD. Sander Moore led the way with four tackles.
Dominic Purpura and TJ Moruzzi applied steady pressure.
Cornerback Tim Kuzel and safety Adam Swade were kept busy
defending the Rams' spread offense and halfback options.
Ryan Dunn had two solid punt returns, while Luke Tamm and
Anthony Vicino averaged over 10 yards on kick returns.
Hinsdale Falcons 90-pound Gold 19, Bloomingdale Bears 8: The
Falcons (4-0) won the battles of undefeated teams. Quarterback
Thomas Ives opened the scoring in the second quarter on a
25-yard keeper, following key blocks by Nick Jung, Weston
Berger, Johnny Campbell and Jimmy Thompson. Mark Dykstra punched
in the extra point.
A swarming defense led by tackles Charles Heimke, Michael
Lohmeier and Will Renehan stopped the Bears on their next
possession.
Dykstra quickly ran the score to 13-0 on a 30-yard sweep.
Bloomingdale's next drive stalled thanks to big tackles by Jack
Clark, Christian Davis, Nate Laing and Nate Morrison.
In the second half, the Bears close to 13-8 after a long drive,
but the Falcons responded with a long drive of their own capped
by Grant Pitcher's 20-yard sprint to the end zone. The Falcons'
defense shut down the Bears after strong pass coverage by Shah-Zeb
Raja and crushing tackles by Davis and Tommy Morrone.
Hinsdale Falcons 80-pound Silver 6, Wheaton Rams Green 0 (OT):
The Falcons (2-2) won in overtime after facing second-and-14 in
the extra period, when both teams get four downs from the
opponents' 10-yard line. Austin Shelton powered for runs of 3
and 9 yards to set up fourth down at the 2. Quarterback Charlie
Zajeski faked another handoff to Shelton and ran in a bootleg
for the TD. Hinsdale had stopped Wheaton in OT on fourth down
from the 6 as linebacker Zack Marinko filled the hole with a
crunching tackle as cornerback Aaron Vanderlinde forced a sweep
inside.
The Falcons defense -- led by linebacker Chris Xhute (7 tackles,
1 assist), Vanderlinde (6 tackles, 1 assist), Marinko (5
tackles, 1 assist) and tackle Shelton (3 tackles, 2 assists,
sack) -- held the Bears to 32 rushing yards for the game. End
davis Palo also had a huge hit on a fourth down play, while
safety Evan Moran made a game-saving tackle on the final series
of regulation.
Zajeski (41 yards, 8 carries) had runs of 6, 10 and 25 yards,
while fullback Vanderlinde (41 yards, 10 carries) and halfback
Shelton (52 yards, 15 carries) had strong rushing games, thanks
to the blocking of center Chute, guard Nick Bjorsen and tackle
Matt Moreton on the right side.
Hinsdale Falcons 115-pound Gold 6, Bloomington Bears 6 (OT): In
a rematch of last year's Super Bowl, the rivals settled for a
tie through regulation and overtime. Hinsdale answered
Bloomington's 20-play scoring drive with Keith Burchett scoring
after his 30-yard run and strong inside runs by Andrew Pyle.
Brian Owens had a clutch interception and 35-yard return to lead
a great defensive effort that also was led by Matt Rafferty, Tim
Glavin, Chris Miller and Owens. Hinsdale had a first-half drive
end at the end on a fumble.
