The Hinsdale Falcons 90-pound Gold earned a
berth in the Bill George Football League Super Bowl Saturday,
Nov. 8, at Benedictine University in Lisle by beating West
Chicago 22-6.
Hinsdale (8-1) took control of a scoreless game in the second
quarter with an 80-yard touchdown burst by quarterback Thomas
Ives, who then threw a conversion pass to Grant Pitcher.
The Falcons' defense held once again thanks to big tackles by
Michael Lohmeier, Will Renehan, Nick Jung and Nate Laing after
Nate Morrison, Shah-Zeb Raja and Jimmy Thompson had forced three
fumbles earlier in the game.
Ives threw a 20-yard TD pass to Thompson with 20 seconds left in
the first half, then Mark Dykstra caught the conversion pass for
a 14-0 lead.
In the second half, defensive ends Jack Clark and Christian
Davis made key stops along with linebacker Sean Neveril. Strong
blocking by Tommy Morrone, Johnny Campbell, Charles Heimke and
Weston Berger then led a long drive by Hinsdale, finished off by
Dykstra's 7-yard TD run. Key runs by Pitcher and Ives helped set
up the score.
West Chicago scored in the final minute.
Hinsdale Falcons 80-pound
Gold 14, Hanover Park Hurricanes 6: Brad Huth scored a
touchdown in the second overtime to lead Hinsdale to a
come-from-behind first-round playoff victory.
Great tackling by Brett Dougherty and Mikey Weingartner keyed a
strong defensive effort by the Falcons.
The Hurricanes notched their lone touchdown early in the second
quarter, but Austin Schwartz sacked the quarterback on the
conversion attempt.
Jake Heiser and Huth took turns running the ball for the Falcons
behind the strong blocking of Colin Goss and Matt Stockmal, but
they weren't able to score until the fourth quarter. With one
minute remaining in regulation, quarterback Griffin Conboy
handed off to Goss, who passed to Luke Lagor in the end zone to
tie the game at 6-6. The missed extra-point attempt and Goss's
tackle on the ensuing kickoff return sent the game into
overtime.
The Falcons were unable to score on their first OT possession,
but great defense by John Fitzgerald and Jake Tribbey kept the
Hurricanes out of the end zone as well. The second overtime
featured runs by Heiser and Huth to get the Falcons within 4
yards of the end zone. Then, on a critical fourth-down play,
Huth took advantage of a great block by Danny Veselik to sweep
into the end zone. Conboy connected on a pass to Will Lattner in
the end zone to give the Falcons a 14-6 lead. Lagor, Jack
Hutchinson and Dougherty then had key tackles to keep the
Hurricanes out of the end zone and complete the Falcon victory.
