Huge Play Vaults Falcons 130 Gold into Super Bowl

The Hinsdale Falcon 130 Gold knew heading into Sunday’s semifinal matchup against #1 seed West Chicago that the game may hinge on a few key plays. What they didn’t know was that 1 key play would translate into a magical moment that will live on for years in the memories of those at the game. The contest began quietly enough with both teams stalling on their opening drives. Jack Adams made a huge tackle for a loss to stop the Wildcats and their star running back, Miguel Flores. Hinsdale then put together a 12 play scoring drive capped by Kyle Cassillo’s 1 yard TD plunge. The Falcons took the ball back after John Weinzelbaum’s big hit caused a fumble recovered by John Claussen. After the Falcons fumbled, the Wildcats put together a drive of their own. The Falcons defense held in dramatic fashion. As the clock expired, Tim Glavin stuffed a run at the 2 yard line, preserving a 6-0 halftime lead. Tackles were also made on the stand by Kevin Kiyosaiki, Brett Goss, and Jacob White.

Hinsdale took control of the game on their first possession of the second half behind the running of Joe Herr (10 rushes, 123 yards) who took the ball to the 2 yard line on a 66 yard sprint. Chris Miller pounded the ball into the end zone followed by Weinzelbaum’s extra point to make it 13-0. The blocking of Jack Liljieberg, TJ Moruzzi, Danny Ives, Karl Grimm, George Parks, Glavin and Eric Mahon paved the way on the drive. The defense held steady behind the tackling of Miller, Mahon, and George Parks. As the 4th Quarter started, however, the Wildcats were far from finished, sustaining a TD drive to push the score to 13-8. A West Chicago interception on the ensuing possession set the stage for a final Wildcat score as the clock ran down. West Chicago took the lead 14-13, on a 4 yard pass with 56 seconds remaining. The Falcons took the ensuing kickoff to their 47 yard line. Out of time outs, the outlook was dim for the Falcons. With the clock running below 40 seconds, Quarterback Miller rolled right and tossed a deep comeback route to Griffin Driscoll. Driscoll cut in front of the cornerback, broke the attempted tackle and outraced the speedy Flores to the end zone. The Hinsdale sideline erupted knowing the Falcons were heading to the Super Bowl in what is the final season of youth football for several of the players. The Falcons are coached by Paul Miller, John Adams, Dave Mahon, Steve Hofmann, Randy McGivney and Larry Zeno.
