YOUTH FOOTBALL-- The Hinsdale Falcons varsity team was hit hard
by injuries even before playing its first game of the season.
That hasn't prevented the Falcons from starting the season at
6-0. Hinsdale beat Wheaton 24-8 on Sunday for its latest
victory.
Hinsdale also defeated Downers Grove 12-6 on Oct. 3. In that
win, Vincent Zenner scored on a 10-yard run early in the game to
put the Falcons ahead 6-0. A 30-yard run by Shelby Parsons on
the game's second play from scrimmage set up the score.
Downers Grove evened the score at 6-6 in the third quarter, but
Hinsdale quarterback Chase Hamilton then scored the game-winning
touchdown on a run.
The Falcons received strong defensive efforts from Max Hartzman,
Matt Pena, Daniel Cooney, Tanner Smolen, Matt Rafferty, Jack
Liljeberg, Brian Allen, Geno Napolitano, Jeremy Drexler, Ryan
Scales and Amaan Fazal.
The offensive line of Robert Benline, Napolitano, Hartzman,
Pena, Damien Hansen and Cooney opened huge holes for running
backs Zenner, Allen and Parsons. Max Peters also contributed
before suffering an injury.
Falcons 115-pound Gold
It's rare when a single lineman dominates a football game, but
that's what Charles Heimke did in the Falcons' 34-6 road win
over the West Chicago Wildcats.
On the first series of the game, Heimke hit a Wildcats' running
back in the backfield, causing a fumble that was recovered by
Hinsdale's Andrew Davis. On the second offensive play for
Hinsdale, linemen Matt Allen, KJ Maloney, and Philip Janowiak
opened a big hole for Thomas Ives, who sprinted 60 yards for a
touchdown.
The Falcons quickly regained possession on the kickoff when
Heimke hit the West Chicago returner and caused another fumble.
The ensuing drive was capped by a 20-yard touchdown run by Mark
Dykstra, who made a nice open-field cut-back to reach the end
zone. West Chicago responded with a TD of its own after a long
pass completion, bringing the score to 13-6.
Hinsdale drove back down the field, only to lose a fumble on the
2-yard line. But Heimke once again took over, pounding the West
Chicago ball carrier for a safety. After the free kick, Hinsdale
drove for another score before the half on a 5-yard scamper by
Dykstra. A 25-yard reception by Davis was a key play on the
drive.
The Hinsdale defense controlled the second half, helped by sacks
by Jimmy Thompson, Nick Jung, and Heimke -- as well as fumble
recoveries by Jay Hayes and Jordan Bradshaw. Nate Morrison,
Shah-Zeb Raja, Robby O'Neill and Alex Herbst all made key plays
on pass defense and run support. The defense held despite losing
safety Ryan Doney in the first half to a dislocated elbow.
Dykstra (10 carries, 111 yards) propelled the offense in the
third quarter with a 55-yard TD run, breaking four tackles along
the way. Zack Hedayat punched in the point-after. Ives (8
carries, 140 yards) completed the scoring with a 30-yard
touchdown run.
